Employment Opportunities

The Outside Clinic formed in 1987 is the UK's largest provider of home eye testing delivering urgently needed services to those individuals who can no longer attend a High St Optician without help or assistance.

Although the company offers a service to group accommodations such as residential and nursing homes the majority of the patients visited are in fact individuals living in their homes. It is the lone pensioner often living on their own that is overlooked by GOS. The offer of such poor remuneration to the average High St Optician to make a home visit often leaves them unable to provide a meaningful service.

The Outside Clinic however through years of experience and even with limited NHS funding is able to deliver this greatly under valued service to those individuals who would otherwise in the words of the RNIB be "unseen and forgotten".
All equipment (except Ophthalmoscope and Retinoscope) is supplied by the company. Gone are the days of a card chart on backs of doors, all Optometrists use the latest mains operated three metre illuminated charts as standard, diagnostic equipment for tonometry and fundus photography is now available in portable ease of use format and in many cases not requiring the use of ancillary drugs.

Fig 1-The latest i-care tonometer. This highly sophisticated rebound instrument does not require the use of a local anaesthetic and therefore is not prone to the negative responce often associated with other instruments where the installation of an anaesthetic is mandatory, e.g. Perkins MK2.

Fig 2 & 3 - Fundus photography (available on request ), is possible due to the latest advances in portable technology The NM 2000 from Nidek allows the user to take a photograph without the use of a mydriatic, similarly to the i-care this reduces and almost eliminates the rejection rate due to any contra-indications associated with the application of ocular drugs.
